Parlaying Parlays: How to Mix Up Your Sports Bets

23 May, 2025

  • 🔄 Same Game Parlays let you weave a single-game story with multiple legs for boosted payouts
  • 🎯 Longshot Ladders stack underdog bets for a moonshot win that could change your bankroll forever
  • 🧠 Hedge Smart with insurance or counter-bets to soften the blow when luck doesn’t go your way

If you're a sports bettor in 2025, you've likely dabbled in parlays - those high-risk, high-reward bets that can turn a modest stake into a significant payday. While most sports bettors are avid sports fans, you don’t necessarily have to be a fanatic to win big on sports gambling.

Having the right strategy, hedging your bets, and doing your research can go a long way in growing your betting budget. So, without further ado, let’s get right into how to parlay your parlays.

What’s in a Parlay? (A.K.A. Accas, Multiples, Combos)

A parlay bet combines two or more individual wagers into a single bet. To win, all selections (or "legs") must be correct. While this increases potential payouts, it also raises the risk. In the UK, these are often called "accumulators" or "accas," while Australians might refer to them as "multis."

Football

Regardless of the name, the concept remains the same: combine multiple bets for a chance at a bigger win. Now, are you ready to get into some sports betting strategy?

The Same Game Symphony: Harmonizing Outcomes

Same Game Parlays (SGPs) allow bettors to combine multiple bets within a single game. For example, in a football match, you might bet on a team to win, a specific player to score, and the total number of goals. This approach offers a more narrative-driven betting experience, letting you craft a story around a single event. However, it's essential to understand the correlations between bets, as some outcomes may influence others, affecting the overall odds.

In an NBA matchup between the Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, a bettor might place an SGP with the following legs:

  • Dallas Mavericks +7.5 point spread
  • Luka Dončić over 34.5 points
  • Stephen Curry under 3.5 made three-pointers

This parlay is "correlated" because if Dončić scores heavily and Curry is limited, it's more likely the Mavericks cover the spread. However, sportsbooks often adjust odds to account for such correlations. In this example, FanDuel offered +496 odds for the SGP, compared to +673 if the bets were uncorrelated.

The Longshot Ladder: Climbing with Underdogs

Embrace the thrill of the underdog by constructing a parlay of longshot bets. For instance, a bettor recently combined eight underdog picks across various sports, including the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the NBA Finals and the Houston Texans to clinch the AFC South. This ambitious parlay had odds of +140584, meaning a $10 bet could yield over $70,000. While the risk is high, the potential rewards are enticing for those willing to take the plunge.

Combining these longshot bets into a single parlay creates the potential for truly massive wins, but no move in sports betting comes without risk. While the odds of all outcomes occurring are slim, the potential payout is substantial, to say the least.

The Prop Shop: Betting on Player Performances

Player prop parlays focus on individual performances rather than game outcomes. For example, in a UFC event, you might bet on a fighter to win in a specific round, land a certain number of strikes, or achieve a takedown.

Tennis

Here’s an example. In a Grand Slam day at Roland Garros, a bettor might craft this prop-based parlay:

  • Carlos Alcaraz to serve over 10.5 aces
  • Aryna Sabalenka to win the first set 6-2
  • Daniil Medvedev to hit under 3.5 double faults

These bets add a layer of excitement, especially when you have insights into player statistics and tendencies. However, it's crucial to research thoroughly, as player performance can be unpredictable.

Why limit yourself to one sport? Cross-sport parlays allow you to combine bets from various sports into a single wager. Imagine a parlay that includes a football team to win, a golfer to finish in the top 10, and a baseball player to hit a home run.

For example, a bettor might create a parlay with the following legs:

  • Manchester United to win the Europa League final
  • Carlos Alcaraz to win the French Open
  • Max Homa to finish in the top 10 at the PGA Championship

This approach diversifies your betting portfolio and keeps you engaged across multiple events. However, it requires knowledge across different sports and careful consideration of scheduling to ensure all events occur within the desired timeframe.

The Insurance Policy: Hedging Your Bets

Some sportsbooks offer parlay insurance, where if one leg of your parlay loses, you get your stake back (up to a certain amount). This feature provides a safety net, allowing you to take calculated risks without the fear of losing your entire stake.

Golfer

Another definition of hedging your bets refers to playing the opposite of a risky bet you have money on, in order to potentially balance out the losses. For instance, you go for a high risk play in the Tottenham - Man Utd Europa League final, such as Tottenham to win by 3+ goals difference. Hedging your bet would mean playing a ticket where you bet Man Utd to win or draw. While hedging of this sort can be strenuous on the budget, not only does it offer the potential for added wins, but it also prevents disasters if you decide to go big and then you go wrong.

These options allow bettors to experiment with parlays while mitigating potential losses. It's especially useful when you're confident in most of your selections but have reservations about one.

Betting Beyond the Basics

Parlays offer a dynamic and engaging way to bet on sports, combining multiple outcomes into a single wager for potentially significant returns. By exploring different parlay strategies - such as same game parlays, longshot combinations, player props, cross-sport bets, and utilizing insurance features - you can tailor your betting experience to your preferences and risk tolerance. And, as always, make sure you bet responsibly and stay informed to make the most of your wagering adventures.
