ABOUT

Return of the Dead by Pragmatic Play continues the tradition of the ‘Book of’ series where players go on an adventure to Ancient Egypt. The Hollywood stereotype is true, there is quite a bit of hidden treasure here, but the ride to that destination might be a little volatile!

Betting Options and Bonus Features

Enthusiastic gamers who appreciate an intense experience will find Return of the Dead's high volatility appealing: it cannot get any higher at 5/5. The default RTP rate of 96.71% is among the highest of the 'Book of' slots. Moreover, the max win is quite decent at 5,000x the bet.

Payouts are triggered on a board of 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines, which players should be all too familiar with. You need three matching symbols for the 10 to A royals, while just two are sufficient for the scarab, Horus, Pharaoh, or the protagonist symbol. The symbol values are impressive, positioned at the higher end of the 'Book Of' slot spectrum. For example, achieving lines of 5 protagonist symbols can award rewards up to 500x the initial bet.

The gameplay of Return of The Dead will offer no surprises if you’ve played other ‘Book of’ titles. The pivotal symbol, as always, is the book symbol, which serves as both a Scatter and a Wild, and also holds a value of 500x for a full line.

Landing 3, 4, or 5 book symbols on the screen rewards you with 2x, 20x, or 200x the stakes, and triggers 10 free spins. Before the free spins commence, one symbol is randomly chosen to be the special expanding symbol. Throughout the free spins, the special symbol expands vertically, covering all three positions on the reel. It’s worth noting that even if these expanded symbols are not adjacent, they still pay out, but they only expand if enough of them are present to form a winning combination. Finally, when 3 book symbols land again, an additional 10 free spins are granted. There is no limit to the number of times this feature can be retriggered.

Roshtein’s Take

To be honest, even for a generic ‘Book of’ slot, Return of The Dead still feels underwhelming compared to the rest of the series. The main character feels gimmicky and lacks any meaningful impact on the gameplay, and the graphic for him looks even more soulless. If anything, players can still enjoy the bonus that makes these types of slots so popular, but it’s hard to point out anything else that is thrilling about the game.
